2019, a partial list of books read

Non Violent Communication - Rosenberg. I dipped into this book and dipped out of it. But is a promising read for sure, coming from a communicating with empathy standpoint.
Trillion Dollar Coach - Eric Schmidt. A breezy read -the story of Bill Campbell who has mentored many in Silicon valley. Read it to know more about different coaching styles.
Alchemy - Rory Sutherland This is a great read on market and customer insights and how much of customer behaviour is psychological.
The Era of Baji Rao - Uday Kulkarni. A historical read on one of the lesser told and known stories of India. And of course, leadership.
Banaras- City of Light by Diane Eck. This one is the best written book on one of the worlds oldest living cities. Written lovingly - I have never read any book on any city in India with such a comprehensive history.
Blitzscaling - Reid Hoffmann. I picked this up with great expectations, but I did not find anything that stood out in particular.
Atomic Habits - James Clear. This book recommended to me by many is a beautiful book on how to build good habits. Such a necessity in these times.
Being Mortal - Atul Gawande. We live our everyday lives without pausing to think about how life will be as one grows older. This is a fantastic read.
Measure what matters - John Doer. A book on OKRs. This is a go-to book for OKRs, how it works, why it works, how it is different from goals and all that.
Who - Geoff Smart. A book on hiring. Full of useful nuggets that are very practical and can be applied right away.
Radical Candor - Kim Smart. This is a good easy to use framework in daily life which we miss. Unless you empathise, challenging wont work. And that is the basis of the book. If you are anywhere in the corporate world (or otherwise), easily implementable.
When breath becomes air - Paul Kalanithi. This is an acclaimed book and brings death to life in its own way.
Three books to add to my collection of books on Innovation: The Ten faces of innovation - Tom Kelley, The art of innovation - Tom Kelley and The Innovators Manifesto - Clayton Christensen
Influencer, the Power to Change Anything - Kerry Patterson - a simple six step approach - easier said than done, but a good read nonetheless.
How not to be wrong - Jordan Ellenberg. A book on basic maths and judgement. I liked the approach of the author.

All in all, mostly business books....a little history, but mostly books used at work....

No conferences

Decided not to attend any conferences this year. Atleast not the typical ones I have often ranted about here. Will be both choosy and intentional about which ones to attend.  The ones to attend are the ones put up by practitioners of a craft. The rest is marketing one way or other.

And the unconference happened

Most conferences have an agenda. No, not the stated agenda, but an agenda of marketing, airtime to sponsors, ensuring the past and future customers are invited, of ensuring that the "stars" of the industry are invited and attention showered of them. All in all it is a your scratch my back, I scratch your back syndrome. Some of these become cliques and claques and therefore the real point behind a conference is lost. And then there is the unconference - organised and run by the alumni of the ISABS ODCP program. And as the name suggests, this is truly an un-conference organised by the alumni, for the alumni. No funders - except the alumni themselves. No sponsors. Just the team.  I havent seen a more tastefully organised conference (yes, its an unconference).  To begin with - the location - not a typical star hotel, but an outdoorsy place. The food - simple. The welcome - personal. It was like a homecoming. The setting was warm and welcoming. It was a smaller conference. Ju...

The power of jotting down ideas

Long long ago, I always used to carry a small letterpad with me. To jot down ideas that might occur. Over the years, it has changed from a notepad to evernote to google keep, but the power of jotting down ideas is immense.  Small ideas go into keep.  Anything to be quickly typed goes into whatsapp as a self message.  Bigger or better formed ideas go into Google docs A few are still written, but I manage to copy them into a digital format sooner rather than later.  But the power of jotting down is immense. My google keep is an encyclopedia of ideas - most of which may never get implemented.
